Professor Ahmad Waseem is Emeritus Professor of Molecular and Cellular Oral Biology at Queen Mary University of London, widely recognized for his pioneering work on keratin biology, cytoskeletal proteins, and cancer biomarkers. After earning his PhD in Biochemistry from Aligarh Muslim University in 1982, he completed postdoctoral research at the University of Chicago, where he discovered adducin, a novel cytoskeletal protein complex. His career in the UK began at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund before moving into academia at King’s College London and later Queen Mary, where he rose to professorship in 2015. Professor Waseem’s research has illuminated the role of keratins in stem cell biology, wound healing, and squamous cell carcinoma, with significant contributions to understanding epithelial-mesenchymal transition in oral and skin cancers. He has published extensively in leading journals, supervised numerous PhD students, and received the Queen Mary ADEPT Fellowship for teaching excellence. In 2023 Prof Waseem established ‘Friends of Researchers in the Indian Subcontinent’, a charity designed to encourage and support collaboration between the researchers of UK/EU and those based in the Indian subcontinent. His legacy includes advancing oral biology research, mentoring future scientists, and fostering international collaborations.
